Mu Alpha Theta Alum Named Contributor to 9-11 Gallery Exhibit
Rebecca Wilkowski, an alum of the Wauwatosa East High School Mu
Alpha Theta chapter in Wauwatosa, WI, has been named as a contributor
to a major exhibit of photographs relating to the tragedies of September
11th. Here Is New York, the Manhattan gallery showcasing the works, has
accepted four of Wilkowski's images for display.
In addition to the gallery's Manhattan location, the exhibit has also
been shown at the MoMA in Manhattan and the Corcoran Gallery in
Washington D.C. Most recently, a book titled "Here Is New York: A
Democracy of Photographs" has been published and will be available
by September 11 of 2002.
The book contains nearly 1,000 of the more than 5,000 photos
submitted to the exhibition. Over 3,000 professional and amateur
photographers submitted their work, and Wilkowski was one of the
approximately 490 photographers to make the final cut.
The book is being touted as the most authentic and comprehensive
record of the events of September 11th. The project and the exhibition
have attracted millions, and the exhibition will tour in the USA and
Europe from summer 2002 onwards with massive media coverage. Tour
cities will include: Arles, Berlin, Dresden, Duesseldorf, Stuttgart,
Zurich, London, Tokyo, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington D.C.,
San Diego, Boca Raton, Tampa, Louisville, and more.
As of December of 2001, more than 30,000 prints had been sold
at a cost of $25 each. As with print sales from the local and
travelling exhibitions, the net proceeds from the sale of the
book will be donated to the Children's Aid Society and other
worthy charities.
Other honors Wilkowski has received for her work include 2 Young
People's Art Exhibition Ribbons, a Young People's Art Exhibition
Certificate of Merit and the Wisconsin Regional Scholastic Art Award.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota and a native of Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, Wilkowski currently lives in San Diego, CA where she works
as a freelance photographer for numerous clients including a local newspaper.
