AwesomeMath:
A three-week intensive summer program for mathematically gifted
students across the nation. This program offers mathematically gifted
students the opportunity to engage in meaningful problem solving activities
and explore in detail areas in advanced mathematics. The high quality instruction
is provided by renowned lecturers and Math Olympiad coaches. The session is from
July 18 - August 7, 2006. Up to 80 students in grades 7-11, 6 instructors, 12
mentors (mostly MOSP alumni), and 3 staff will meet at the University of Texas at Dallas.

High School Students To Star at Summer Science Program:
Applications are now open for the Summer Science Program (SSP),
an exhilarating six-week experience in which small teams of high school students
apply physics, calculus, and programming
to determine the orbit of an asteroid from their own observations. One of the
oldest (since 1959) and most prestigious pre-college research programs, SSP is held
on campuses in Socorro, New Mexico, and Ojai, California. Current juniors and
sophomores are eligible to apply; deadlines are February 25th (first round) and
March 25th (final). Bright teenagers from around the world come to SSP to spend
their days in college-level lectures, and their nights doing hands-on astronomical
research (to be later archived at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics).
Guest lectures from prominent scientists (many of whom are themselves alumni), and
field trips to places like the Very Large Array of radio telescopes and NASA's Jet
Propulsion Lab round out the curriculum. Students describe SSP as an intense, stimulating
intellectual and social environment, "the educational experience of a lifetime."
Emphasis is on teamwork and cooperation; neither grades nor formal credit are given.
Enrollment is limited to 36 per campus, and seven faculty members live on-site with the students.
Students, parents, and teachers are encouraged to visit
www.summerscience.org
for more information and an online application. SSP is managed and largely funded
by its own alumni, and established in cooperation with California Institute of
Technology, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Harvey Mudd College, New Mexico Tech,
Pomona College, Stanford University, and UCLA. Additional support is provided by the
Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
